September 1st is the new New Years.

As soon as December rolls around, many of us rush to set new goals and aspirations for the year ahead. The prospect of a fresh start with the new calendar year feels invigorating. But why do we reserve this sense of renewal for December 31?

For as long as I can remember, September has been the true month of new beginnings. Summer fades, giving way to cooler nights and shorter days. Back-to-school season has always been in September, a time when we refresh our supplies and redefine the image we project to others. September naturally embodies change and fresh starts, so why not embrace it as the perfect time for intentional goal-setting?

This year, I’m taking the September refresh seriously, committing to my big, scary goals. And here’s the good news: even if you’re not fully convinced that September is the real New Year, it’s still the ideal time to check in on your annual goals and ensure you’re finishing the calendar year in alignment with your January vision.

Steps to get the most of your September refresh:

  1. Spend the first week reflecting on the changes you want to see.
    • Consider how you want to close out this year and where you want to be a year from now.
  2. Break down your longer-term vision into actionable, shorter-term goals.
    • 12 week goals continue to be the sweet spot for me - long enough to accomplish something meaningful, yet short enough to maintain focus and commitments with greater ease.
  3. Take the thinking out of it.
    • Identify the daily, weekly, and monthly habits and tasks necessary to achieve your first 12-week goal. This approach lets you focus on taking action rather than constantly planning and evaluating.

By following this structure, you should be able to accomplish a meaningful goal by early to mid-December—perfectly timed to enjoy a relaxing holiday season, after which you can do it all over again. 😉
